IUP grad pens book about introducing new baby to family dog
PITTSBURGH — RoseDog Books has released a children’s book that would assist expectant parents in preparing their dog for the arrival of a new baby.
Author Jodi E. Uhron, a 2002 Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate whose maiden name is Jodi Warren, describes the sibling-like relationship of her daughter and dog in her children’s book “Sydney & Me,” which was released Dec. 8.
Uhron uses her 3-year-old daughter’s viewpoint to explain the dog’s and baby’s first introduction, child-dog safety tips, small dog-care chores for a child, and the fun that they have together. Uhron and her husband, Matthew, attended a baby-ready pets class prior to their daughter’s birth to prepare their Shih Tzu for the baby’s arrival.
After learning some recent events in the news involving family dogs attacking small children, she decided that the information learned in that class was something that every family with small children and dogs should know.
“Sydney & Me” is a children’s book geared toward children ages 2-5 and can teach them about how to safely interact with a dog, but the information in the book is geared toward parents as well to ensure that their dog’s and children’s relationship stays safe.
In addition to child-dog safety, the book provides ideas for how a child can help with the dog’s everyday care. Uhron’s daughter performs simple tasks in the book, such as giving her dog a treat. Uhron will appear at the Learning Lamp Book Festival in Johnstown from April 10 to April 12.
