IUP twirlers win state competition
Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Crimson Twirlers Baton Club took the state championship title for its division in the 2014 Blue Sapphire Classic Baton Competition held in State College May 3 and 4.
The six-member team won the title for the Senior Small Group Dance and Baton division at the competition.
Ali Troutman, the squad’s captain, said there were more than 50 groups competing for the title.
“We started (learning) the routine about two months before the competition,” Troutman said.
In addition to competing, the Twirlers perform at IUP basketball games during halftime and do halftime shows at local high schools. This year they performed at Penns Manor High School and Hempfield High School.
The club is a recreational sport at the university.
For the competition, teams were judged on three criteria: best appearing (costume), x-strut and solo (forms within routines).
All of the women on the team, according to Troutman, have four to 17 years of experience twirling and performing.
This was the fifth year the competition was held.
