on June 14, 2014 10:49 AM

The Ovations! series, presented by the Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is set to present two major Broadway touring productions during the 2014-2015 season plus one international theatrical event.

The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China will perform “Cirque Peking” on Nov. 11.

The troupe was founded in 1951 and has remained one of the most acclaimed acrobatic troupes in China and across the globe.

With more than 200 artists performing since its founding, they have won countless gold and silver awards at international and national acrobatic competitions and circus festivals. Since their first visit to the U.S. in 1972, the company has toured more than 500 cities in 70 countries.

On Jan. 20, “Sister Act” rolls into Fisher Auditorium. Subtitled “A Divine Musical,” this Broadway hit is the feel-amazing musical comedy smash that The New York Post called “Ridiculously fun.”

With inspiration from the hit movie of the same name that featured Whoopi Goldberg, the score is filled with original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (“Newsies,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Little Shop of Horrors”).

“Sister Act” tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier. This wannabe diva’s life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look — a convent. Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Closing the season will be “Memphis the Musical” on May 4.

Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, “Memphis” features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro (“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”) and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan. Memphis is directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (“Xanadu”) and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys”).

Inspired by actual events, Memphis is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break.

From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tenn., this hot musical bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible original songs and a tale of fame and of a forbidden love.

Both musicals are the national touring companies direct from Broadway with all three theatrical performances part of the 12-event Ovations! season being planned to celebrate the Lively Arts’ 25th anniversary season.

Brochures detailing the full season, subscriptions and other information will be available by early July with members donating to the Ovations! series receiving advance information and ordering options around the end of June.
