Jack earns accolades

Suzy Jack, formerly of Indiana, has joined a distinguished list of government leaders.

Jack, daughter of Maria Jack and Dan Jack, both of Indiana, recently graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government program with a fellowship from the David Bohnett Foundation.

The foundation has sent a select group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fellows to participate in the intensive, three-week program. Some of the county’s top gay and lesbian political figures are among the list of distinguished alumni, including Houston Mayor Annise Parker and New York state Sen. Tom Duane (D-Manhattan).

Currently, Jack serves as deputy controller of the City of Los Angeles.

“The Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program was a life-changing experience,” Jack said. “I am excited to continue my career in public service and to put the invaluable skills I gained to work for the people of Los Angeles.”

According to a press release, the recent rulings by the United States Supreme Court striking down the Defense of Marriage Act and dismissing the Proposition 8 case has put a spotlight on LGBT issues. Bohnett backed the fellowship program because he believes that leadership training is one of the best ways of advancing civil rights.

“So much is at stake for the next wave of LGBT leaders, and the Leadership Fellows program reflects this pivotal period,” Bohnett said. “It empowers LGBT leaders who are making a difference in the world, honing skills and furthering their leadership potential.”

Any openly LGBT senior-level executive in state and local government, including agency representatives, non-profit leaders and elected officeholders, can apply to the program.
