Library announces free events for coming week

The Indiana Free Library will offer the following free programs this week:


• Rhythm and Rhyme, 10:30 a.m.: “A Frog in the Bog,” by Karma Wilson. Especially for ages 2-4. (Children’s department)

• Brown Bag Concert, 1 p.m.: Acoustic guitarist and vocalist Anthony Frazier will sing a variety of contemporary folk songs in this informal concert. Beverages provided.

• Dr. Marcus History Lecture, 1 p.m.: “The Transformation of Irish into Irish Americans.” A great famine and British policy led to a major migration of Irish, with many of them settling in urban areas of the U.S. At first the Irish met with discrimination, but over the years they became an integral part of American society. Free refreshments served. (Reading Area)


• Toddler Tales, 10:30 a.m.: For 1- and 2-year-olds. Welcome the arrival of spring with “Spring Is Here,” by Taro Gomi. (Children’s department)

• Spring Gardening Series, 1 p.m.: “Gardening with Perennials.” Master Gardener Jan Petro will discuss choosing, planting and maintaining perennials for your garden. Learn how to have beautiful flowers that come back year after year. (Community Room)

• Technology Tuesday, 4 p.m.: “Inspiration from the Web: Pinterest and Instructables.” Learn about two of the most popular crafting websites in this one-hour program.

See how to find craft ideas and instructions, or how to post your own. Sign-up is required and space is limited. Ages 12 and up.


• Preschool Story Time, 10:30 a.m.: Especially for children ages 3-5. Celebrate the arrival of spring with the stories “Rabbit’s Good News” and “What Can You Do in the Wind?” A craft is included. (Children’s department)

• Knitting Club, 10:30 a.m.: Learn to knit or improve skills in this new group that formed from the fall knitting class. Beginners welcome. Experienced knitter Celeste Capizzi will be on hand to teach and provide guidance. Experienced knitters, bring your current projects and join the fun. (Community Room).

• Make a T-shirt Scarf or Necklace, 1 p.m.: Turn an ordinary T-shirt, new or gently used, into a beautiful accessory. Bring a cotton T-shirt without side seams, size medium or larger. A limited number of shirts will be available for purchase at the class for $2 each. No crafting or sewing experience required. For ages 12 and up. Space is limited to eight participants, so sign up at the circulation desk or by calling (724) 465-8841, extension 0. (Community Room)

• Storybook Artist, 7 p.m.: Geared toward third- through fifth-graders, the book we’ll read is Robert Bender’s “The A to Z Beastly Jamboree.” We’ll look at his illustrations then each choose a letter and design a scene to go around it. (Children’s department)

• Learn to Knit Baby Sweaters, 7 p.m. Take your knitting to the next level. Learn to knit baby sweaters in this three-week class for nonbeginners taught by experienced knitter Pat Simkins. She will also answer any knitting questions or problems participants may have.

• Book Babies, 10:30 a.m. Hooray for Spring! For little ones from birth to 18 months. (Children’s department)

• Pins and Patches Quilting Group, 1 to 3 p.m. Beginners and experienced quilters welcome. No experience necessary. (Community Room)

• Thursdays 101 — “Indieflix,” 3 p.m.: Love movies? You can download award-winning independent and foreign films for free by using Indieflix on the library’s website.

Elementary-School Age Program, 11–11:30 a.m.: Celebrate spring’s arrival by reading “It’s Spring!” Includes a craft. (Children’s department)
