Makenna goes to school
Thursday was a special day for Makenna McMasters, 5, of Shelocta. That was the day she started kindergarten.
Today the Gazette chronicles her first ever day of school, from her morning bowl of cereal to her first steps inside Ben Franklin Elementary School.
Makenna eagerly anticipated the big day all summer.
“She’s been very, very excited about school for a very long time,” said her mother, Angela, 33.
Makenna is the first of Angela and her husband Jeremy’s children to start school.
“These five years went so fast,” she said.
Makenna’s mind, however, was on her rapidly approaching scholastic future.
“She can’t be any more excited, I don’t think,” Angela said. “You know they’re ready, but you’re also thinking, ‘she’s only 5.’”“Mommy, are we ready to go?” she asked Angela as the school bus’s time of arrival quickly approached.
Makenna has been ready for awhile, from the sounds of it. At a soft-start orientation for kindergarteners on Tuesday, hermom said, she was ready to stay at school.
Just a few of the things the new student is looking forward to: art class, learning to read (and then being able to teach her younger brothers to read) and riding the school bus with her “best buddy,” who lives two houses down.
