GREENSBURG — Clayton Mibroda, 26, of Bolivar, who was found guilty in January of the third-degree murder of his 20-day-old, prematurely born daughter, was sentenced at the Westmoreland County Courthouse Tuesday to 15 to 30 years in prison.

According to the prosecution’s testimony at his trial, Mibroda struck his daughter, Natalee, in his home on Dec. 27, 2011, causing the severe head and chest injuries that led to her death.

The baby stopped breathing and was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead within minutes of her arrival.

Two days later, state police in Indiana charged Mibroda with a general count of criminal homicide.

An autopsy revealed Natalee suffered a brain hemorrhage, a broken collarbone and a hemorrhage in an eye.

At the trial, two forensic pathologists and a child abuse expert all agreed the injuries were not the result of an accident.

When he testified in his own defense, Mibroda said his girlfriend, Kayla Lichtenfels, Natalee’s mother, inflicted the fatal injuries. There were no other witnesses to Natalee’s death as the only two people who were with her that morning were Mibroda and Lichtenfels.

At the time of the baby’s death, Lichtenfels was seeking treatment for postpartum depression and had asked Mibroda’s mother, Vickie Fetterman, to take the children before she did something to hurt them. Mibroda testified that on the day Natalee died, Lichtenfels called the baby a derogatory name, picked her up by her head and threw her into a car seat. However, prosecutors said it was Mibroda who struck Natalee because he was angry that she wouldn’t stop crying.

Assistant District Attorney Barbara Jollie told the sentencing judge Tuesday, “We all know that crying babies cause frustration ... but the response here was anger or rage.”

Mibroda has been held in the Westmoreland County Prison since he was charged in December.
