PENNS MANOR: School taking part in summer lunch program
KENWOOD — Penns Manor School District will participate in the Seamless Summer Lunch Program during two time periods this summer, the district’s board voted Thursday.
The first summer lunch program, which is part of the Evergreen Boys & Girls Club, will operate from June 24 to July 19, with the exception of July 4 and 5. The district will serve breakfast, lunch and a snack during this program.
Then, a Seamless Summer Lunch Program will run from Aug. 12 through Aug. 23, during the district’s fall sports camps and Elementary Jump Start Program. Only lunch will be served during that time.
The program is open to all students in the district, said Superintendent Thomas Kakabar, adding that they don’t have to belong to the Evergreen Boys & Girls Club or the other programs, and is of no cost to parents whose children participate.
Parents provide transportation and are permitted to eat at the school with their children, Kakabar said, but they have to pay for their own meals.
The Elementary Jump Start Program allows children who might have been struggling the prior year or students who are just coming into school to receive tutoring from teachers two weeks before the start of the school year.
“They get a jump-start on the school year and try to get them off to a good start,” Kakabar said.
Title I funds will be used to cover the cost of the jump-start program.
Also Thursday, Kakabar announced that the PSSA exams started this week for both the elementary and high school.
“It seems like everybody’s been on task and working to their best,” he said, based on what he’s seen during walkthroughs in the hallways and what he’s heard from Principals Daren Johnston and David Grimaldi.
Grimaldi reiterated Kakabar’s statement, telling the board that he’s talked to the elementary students about confidence, focus and taking their time on the tests.
“From what I’m seeing this week, I’m really proud of the students’ effort,” Grimaldi said. “My hope is that the results are indicative of that.”
He also said that students are participating in several Earth Day activities, such as a schoolwide newspaper collection, papier-m￢ch￩ projects, distribution of seedlings from the Pennsylvania Game Commission to all students on Arbor Day, property cleanup and daily facts about Earth Day during morning announcements.
Grimaldi also thanked Lehigh Gas and Uni-Mart at 400 Philadelphia St. in Indiana for a $500 grant that will be used to purchase two microscopes and a water cycle model activity set for the science department.
Also Thursday, Kakabar thanked everyone who participated in this year’s high school musical production of “Little Women.”
“I thought the show was done very professionally. The students did an outstanding job,” he said, adding that the production involved more than 40 students.
In other matters, the board:
- Approved the Indiana County Technology Center general operating budget for the fiscal year July 1 to June 30, 2014, for $2,794,821, with the district’s share, including jointure allocation, being $266,210.
- Granted district employees Andy Bridge, Terrie Grove, Jerry Hughes, Murray King and Bill Kochinsky their summer salary in a lump sum payment in June, if funds are available.
- Approved the extension of the district’s contract with Canton’s Driving School Inc. for another year at $500 per year for administrative costs and $195 per student for behind-the-wheel instruction, or $200 per student if the cost of gas is $4 or more. Students enrolling in the behind-the-wheel program are responsible for $50 of the student instruction fee.
- Revised the 2012-13 school calendar to reflect Feb. 11, March 11, March 28, April 2 and June 7 as snow makeup days.
- Approved the following as day-to-day substitutes for the 2012-13 school year: Shasta Meixelsberger, elementary education; Brienne Metzgar, early childhood education and special education; Heather Miller, early childhood education N-3 and elementary education K-6; Amy Rankin, elementary K-6; and Heather Miller and Catherine Reilly, secretarial.
- Approved the voluntary transfer of Karen Cramer from her current position of high school receptionist/secretary to elementary office secretary at her current rate of $13.79 per hour, effective Monday.
- Accepted the resignation of April Lewis as a 2ﾽ-hour per day cafeteria monitor, effective immediately.
- Approved Kenneth Rainey as an additional bus driver/substitute for Tri-County Transportation during the 2012-13 school year.
- Accepted the resignation of Erika Talmadge as the girls’ varsity volleyball head coach, effective immediately, and granted the administration permission to post and advertise for the position.
