Saltsburg Auxiliary honors students at spring banquet

A number of students were recently honored at the Saltsburg American Legion Auxiliary’s annual spring banquet.

Seven senior girls were named as the Girl of the Month from October through April.

Criterion for this selection process include academic work, participation in extracurricular activities, respect earned from fellow students and teachers, dependability, leadership, character and community service.

The seven girls for the 2012-13 school year were: Nichole Johnson, Bayli Zimmerman, Lisa Prenni, Nicole Rado, Haley Adams, Katelyn Litton and Calie Weimer. One of these girls was selected to receive the Saltsburg American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship.

This year’s scholarship was awarded to Katelyn Litton, who will be attending Seton Hill University.

Malinda Pistininzi and Jessica Pratt, who completed their junior year at Saltsburg Middle High School, have been selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Keystone Girls State event held June 23 to 29 at Shippensburg University.

This week of government-in-action is meant to educate young women concerning the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities that come with American citizenship. Girls State is a mythical nonpartisan 51st state.

Attendees experience all levels of government including city, county, state and federal levels. They will be assigned to a mythical political party.

Abrielle Okopal was selected by the faculty of the Saltsburg Middle School to receive the 8th Grade Girls’ School Award.

This award recognizes honor, courage, scholarship, Americanism, leadership and service.

This year’s Americanism Essay Contest was titled “What Freedom Do I Most Enjoy.” Elementary and middle-high school students participated in this essay contest.

Essays were submitted to a committee of elementary teachers and school staff, who read and judged them.

All of the students who participa

ted received a certificate. Monetary awards went to the first-, second- and third-place finishers. Grades 3 and 4 winners were: first, Hannah Muir; second Madison Prenni; third, Gino Bartolini. Grades 5 and 6 winners were first, Mitchel Rager; second, Mariah Simpson; third, Miranda Guthrie. Grades 7 and 8 winners were: first, Liam Simic; second, Frankie Plowman; third, Laura McGinnis. Katelyn Litton was the first-place winner for grades 11 and 12.

First-place winners were invited to read their essays at the American Legion Post 57 Memorial Day ceremony at the Edgewood Cemetery in Saltsburg.
