Saltsburg students to compete in math event
A strong group of Saltsburg’s high-achieving students in grades 9-12 are busy preparing for the 54th annual Indiana University of Pennsylvania High School Mathematics competition to be held today at IUP.
Sponsored by the mathematics department, the event aims to provide recognition for capable mathematics students as well as continue to arouse their individual and collective interest in mathematics.
These objectives are accomplished through the students utilizing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to solve challenging, applied mathematical problems.
The competition includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry and other topics that are included in the secondary mathematics curriculum. Students will not be permitted to use a calculator at any time during the competition.
There is a limit of 10 students per school. Participating from Saltsburg will be seniors Derek Feiling, Sam Hefferin, Frank Plowman and Dan Shirley; juniors Alexandra Humphrey, Jace Resnick, Isabel Satler and Elizabeth Zapach; and ninth-graders Miranda Guthrie and Michael Shirley.
At the conclusion of the competition, the department will award plaques to the top six individual finishers and the top student in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, and team trophies to the six schools with the highest overall scores. A team score is calculated by the sum of the top three individual scores from each school’s team.
