A northern Indiana County man faces an automatic life prison sentence after being convicted in the shooting death of his father-in-law last year in North Mahoning Township.

Jurors in Indiana County Court deliberated less than three hours before finding Shaun Casey Fairman, 33, guilty of second-degree murder.

Judge William Martin said Fairman would formally be sentenced May 28. The jury also convicted him of aggravated assault/causing bodily injury, aggravated assault/causing bodily injury with a deadly weapon, and burglary.

Attorneys did not dispute that Fairman shot Richard Shotts, 55, of the Rural Valley area, early June 3 at the residence of his estranged wife, Jessica Fairman, along Route 210 near Trade City.

Defense lawyers contended Fairman was mentally impaired and should have been convicted of no charge more serious than third-degree murder.

Fairman's trial began with jury selection Monday morning and concluded when the verdict was announced at 2:22 this afternoon.
