Students raise funds for Relay
Indiana University of Pennsylvania students raised more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society through the IUP Relay for Life event in April.
A total of 38 teams participated in the event, held April 13 and 14 at IUP.
In addition to the 20-hour walk relay, several university groups and organizations held separate fundraisers before and after the official relay to add to the total funds raised.
Altogether, more than 560 students were part of the fundraising efforts generating $20,203.
This year’s relay brought in nearly twice the funds of last year’s relay due to increased Greek life participation and a stronger social media presence.
“This year, the relay coincided with the end of Greek Week,” said IUP student Meghan Mack, chairwoman for this year’s relay, “so we incorporated relay into the competition.
Greek organizations received points for participating, so those chapters really increased our participant and fundraising numbers.”
The relay’s Facebook and Twitter pages were updated daily and helped generate interest in the event, Mack said.
