Young readers invited to join NIE Summer Experience
For most area students, summer vacation is full of experiences. The Indiana Gazette’s Newspaper in Education Summer Experience is offered so that loss of school-year learning doesn’t become one of them.
“The Summer Experience program has been going on for more than 25 years,” said Hastie Kinter, coordinator of the Gazette’s NIE program. “It’s an opportunity for kids to continue learning through the summer and try not to lose some of the skills they learned the previous years.”
The program, which bears the theme “Dig in to Reading” this year, gives students the chance to participate in weekly activities found in the Gazette on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning next Tuesday and running through July 30. Area students entering kindergarten through grade 12 are eligible to participate.
Participating students are required to complete five out of nine published activities, which are labeled in the paper by grade level. Instructions for each activity should be clipped and attached to the student’s work.
Each activity should be signed by the student who completed it, then submitted with the T-shirt coupon found in the newspaper to The Indiana Gazette by Aug. 2.
Activities like this in the newspaper are important, Kinter said, because they help encourage student success.
“Reading the newspaper in the home is important for children’s success in school,” Kinter said. “It helps them be a part of their community, learn about their community and hopefully someday get involved in their community, and helps them reinforce a lot of skills they learn in the classroom.”
Distribution of T-shirts to those students who have completed at least five of the activities will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24. A photo of the participants will be taken that day and published in the Gazette.
The summer learning doesn’t stop with the Gazette, though.
The Indiana Free Library offers summer programs for students to continue their education through the summer, with these programs having already begun on June 17 and ending on July 15. The weeklong programs include “Digging in to the Past,” “Underground Burrowers” and “Under the Earth,” as well has daily programs for toddlers to teens.
