Pickelball champs

Dr. Pothen Varughese, a retired IUP professor from Indiana, right, and his doubles partner, Bill Hunsberger, of Hagerstown, Md., won the gold medal in pickleball doubles at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, N.M., in the 80-84 age bracket.

The games were held between June 15 and 25, with some 14,000 people competing in various sports.

Varughese, who said he has been playing the sport for 14 years, was among those who introduced the game to the Indiana area and has been instrumental in construction of local pickleball courts.
