Bem to receive lifetime achievement award
Stan Bem, a former Purchase Line football coach and high school principal and former president of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, will be honored by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame at its 16th annual Student-Athlete Scholarship Banquet on March 17.
Bem is one of three men and 10 college student-athletes who will be honored along with 46 high school student-athletes.
Bem will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. After playing guard at West Virginia in the mid-1960s, Bem became the head football coach at Purchase Line at 21 years old and coached for eight years, staying on to teach social studies. In 1978 he became the school principal and retired in 2003. He was longtime official in the PIAA. He was inducted into the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
At least 16 of the scholastic student-athletes will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their college education.
The event will be held at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the Penn Sate campus.
