Special Olympics Pennsylvania Armstrong-Indiana County held its annual bocce tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14.

More than 30 athletes from Armstrong and Indiana counties competed at White Township Recreation Complex. Since the number of bocce athletes has doubled since last year, the event was extended and each athlete played on teams of two, completing one game on a soil court and one game on a grass court.

Coaches Anne Simmons (Indiana County) and Holly Shoaf (Armstrong County) prepared athletes for the event by practicing for more than eight weeks in various locations on grass and soil courts. Afterward, athletes were served a picnic-style lunch by a women’s group from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony in which all athletes received a medal. David Rummel, of Indiana County, earned a silver medal, and Nicole Ramer, of Armstrong County, won a gold medal. (Submitted photos)
