GOLF: Zachwieja shoots 61, shatters VFW course record

Vince Zachwieja had an idea what the Indian Springs Golf and Country Club course record was when he went out Saturday — he had just tied it the previous day.

Out for another try, Zachwieja, 30, of Indiana, shattered the record by three strokes, shooting a whopping 10-under-par 61 at the VFW course.

“I just started out kind of so-so and got on a roll there, started making a few birdies in a row,” he said.

Zachwieja, who is originally from West Virginia and moved to Indiana from Florida a year-and-a-half ago, equaled the old course record with a 64 on Friday.

He worked as a club pro at the Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla., and played on mini tours in Florida and North Carolina from 2009 to ’11.

“I knew what (the record) was,” Zachwieja said. “I had tied it actually the day before. I knew I was pretty close. About the 14th hole I was at the number I needed to be. If I parred out I would’ve had it, but I managed to make two more birdies. I knew after 16 I really had it unless I messed up.”

Zachwieja birdied Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 and didn’t have any bogeys. He played with Danny Clark, Ducky Bistok and Ted Zernick.

“I’ve always played quite a bit of golf,” Zachwieja said. “My job now allows me to keep playing quite a bit of golf. I golf about every day. I’ve been playing since I was eight or nine years old.”

But it wasn’t just a ringer coming into Indiana and taking over.

“That was my lowest round ever by a couple shots,” he said. “It was just a day everything was going right. I made a lot of putts. You don’t have those days too often.”
