Hall of Fame seeks nominations

The Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for its 2014 induction class.

The deadline to submit nominations is Oct. 31.

The class will be elected in November, and the induction banquet will be held Sunday, May 18, at the Rustic Lodge.

Only members of the Hall of Fame can submit nominations. Dues are $10 for an annual membership or $100 for a lifetime membership.

MC boosters slate tourney

MARION CENTER — The Marion Center Basketball Boosters will hold a dodgeball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the high school.

Teams will be made up of eight players. The fee for each team is $96.

Indiana will open the WPIAL Class AA girls’ team tennis playoffs at home Thursday.

Indiana, the Section 4-AA champion, will take on Mount Pleasant at 3 p.m. at the First Commonwealth Courts at the White Township Recreation Complex.

The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face either Greensburg Central Catholic, Springdale or Burrell.

Springdale and Burrell were playing today to determine which team would advance out of the play-in round to face Greensburg Central Catholic on Thursday.

IHS still perfect in volleyball

LIGONIER — Indiana ran its record to 11-0 by sweeping Ligonier Valley, 25-15, 25-13, 25-18, in a non-conference girls’ volleyball match Monday.

Helena Dadson racked up eight kills and six blocks to pace Indiana. Shannon Ream tacked on six kills and three blocks, Natalie Cignetti added nine kills, and Aaryn Gray chipped in seven kills.

Ligonier Valley won the junior varsity match, 2-1.

Both teams play this evening. Indiana travels to Ford City, and Ligonier Valley plays host to Marion Center.

Apollo-Ridge sweeps match

SPRING CHURCH — Apollo-Ridge swept Highlands, 25-21, 25-10, 25-12, in a WPIAL non-section match.

Courtney Casella paced the Vikings with 14 service points and three kills. Reannah Martin added seven service points and three kills, and Vanessa Stegner had four aces.

Apollo-Ridge won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-13.

Apollo-Ridge plays host to Derry today.

Lenze paces Indiana runners

GREENSBURG — Adam Lenze won the boys’ race in Indiana’s last regular-season cross country meet of the season.

Lenze posted a time of 17 minutes, 35 seconds. Indiana beat Penn-Trafford but lost to Greensburg Salem. Ryan Louther finished third at 18:21, Sam Lenze placed seventh at 19:01, Eamon McArdle came in 13th at 19:28, and Brian Bowersox finished 17th in 20:00.

Kacey Raible led the Indiana girls with a sixth-place finish in 21:39. Melanie Zolocsik finished seventh at 22:26, Jesse Lenze placed ninth at 23:06, Taylor Thomas came in 10th at 23:10, and Beth Balencic finished 11th at 23:24.

Penn-Trafford’s Sarah Taylor won in 20:11.

No team scores were available.

Indiana competes in the Indiana County Meet at IUP on Thursday.

Blairsville girls improve to 12-1

BLAIRSVILLE — Blairsville improved to 12-1 by defeating Saltsburg, 53-19, in a ninth-grade girls’ basketball game Monday.

Rena Enterline scored a game-high 27 points to power Blairsville. Michaela Hays added eight points.

Isabel Satler scored 15 points to pace Saltsburg.

Blairsville won the seventh- and eighth-grade game, 33-14, to remain unbeaten.

McKenzie Misleany hit four 3-point field goals and scored 14 points for the Bobcats (10-0).

IASB teams win four of five

Indiana Area Soccer Boosters teams won four of five matches over the weekend.


The U-12 boys’ Blackhawks edged Plum, 2-1. Aaron McKelvy led Indiana with a goal and an assist. Elliot Hill netted a goal, and Jack Turner and Josh Kardell shared goaltending duties.

Cian Williamson-Rea scored three goals to lead the U-12 boys’ Redhawks to a 5-3 win over Hempfield. Andre Rubenstein had a goal and an assist, Malik Turner chipped in a goal, Ethan Shearer tacked on two assists, and Adam Shephard added an assist. Williamson-Rea, Shearer and Turner each played in goal.

The U-12 girls’ Storm defeated Hempfield, 4-1. Caelia Williams, Hannah Scardina, Rachel Bowersox and Emily Sebring each scored a goal for Indiana. Isabel Tillet and Alicia Mitchel split goaltending duties.

Vince Belice netted four goals to pace the U-12 Blackhawks to a 7-2 win over Somerset. Noah Grattan added three assists, and Jack Tillet, Isaac Myers and David Scardina each scored a goal. Xander Williams and Lee Rosenberger each notched an assist, and Ethan Kutz, Jack Mock and Williams each played in goal.

The U-10 girls’ Lightning lost to Plum, 4-3. Isabella Garzarelli scored two goals for Indiana. Sophia Gar-zarelli, who added a goal, shared goaltending duties with Emily Scherf.

Hughes leads Kiski golf team

FOX CHAPEL — C.J. Hughes, who is from Indiana and plays for Kiski School, led the Cougars to their second straight Interstate Preparatory School League boys’ golf championship Wednesday at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

Hughes also shot a 73 to help the Cougars win the Centennial Cup in a 402-409 win over Mercersburg Academy at Whitetail Golf Club in Bath on Sept. 28.

On Thursday, Hughes carded a 36 and was the medalist to lead Kiski School to a 201-223 win over Greensburg Central Catholic.

Hinston fires hole-in-one

SPRING CHURCH — Gary Hinston, of Bradford Woods, fired a hole-in-one at The Links at Spring Church on Saturday.

Hinston used a 7-iron to ace No. 4, which was playing at 156 yards.

Braun in 16th after first round

SEWICKLEY — Indiana Country Club golf pro Daniel Braun sits in 16th place after Monday’s first round of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tour Championship at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

Braun carded a 77.

The second and final round is today.
