HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Ligonier hands Blairsville first loss
Ligonier Valley’s Luke Ferlin ripped a three-run double in the seventh inning to lift the Rams to a 7-5 win over previously unbeaten Blairsville in a Heritage Conference baseball game Monday at WyoTech Park.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh, Ferlin belted a base-clearing double off Ryan Shirley to give the Rams a 7-4 lead.
Blairsville mustered a run in the bottom of the seventh before getting shut down by winning pitcher Rick Ross.
The Bobcats, who outhit the Rams 9-8, left 11 runners on base.
“We were putting guys on base and getting them in scoring position. There was just no clutch hitting,” Blairsville coach Mark Zerfoss said.
Jacob Nemeth led Ligonier Valley by going 2-for-4 with a triple. Jordan Jones finished 2-for-3.
Ross struck out six and walked two in a complete game.
Josh Daugherty singled twice and drove in two runs for the Bobcats. Ricky Shirley, Colton McMillan and Cameron Livingston stroked two singles apiece.
Both teams play Wednesday. Blairsville (5-1) travels to Marion Center, and Ligonier Valley plays host to Purchase Line.
SALTSBURG 13, PENNS MANOR 2: Saltsburg ace Ian Satler struck out a season-high 14 and tossed a one-hitter to help the Trojans roll over visiting Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Tanner Sink broke up Satler’s bid for a no-hitter when he smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Satler walked one and allowed just three base runners. He also went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Burke Oday singled and drove in three runs for Saltsburg. Tanner Yard doubled and scored three runs.
Both teams play Wednesday. Saltsburg (4-6) visits Homer-Center, and Penns Manor (3-3) welcomes Northern Cambria.
APOLLO-RIDGE 4, BURRELL 1: Apollo-Ridge jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then shut down host Burrell in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game.
The Vikings scored two runs in each of the second and third innings. Apollo-Ridge outhit Burrell, 8-2.
Brandon Neal went 3-for-3 to power the Vikings. Loren Wingard doubled and drove in two runs.
Mike Percic struck out five, walked four and allowed no earned runs in 6 1-3 innings to earn the win. Austin Laird got the last two outs to record the save.
Apollo-Ridge (2-3, 2-1 section) travels to Ford City today.
DERRY 9, GREENSBURG SALEM 2: Derry mounted big rallies in the fifth and seventh innings to rout Greensburg Salem in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA game at Golden Lions Field.
John Garufi went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base for Derry. Luke Ridilla singled twice and stole two bases, Cameron Gerhard doubled, drove in two runs and stole a base, and Devin Siko singled and drove in two runs.
Joey Kelly struck out five, walked three and allowed six hits in six innings to pick up the win.
Derry (4-3, 3-2) plays host to Indiana today.
