HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: SUMMIT ACADEMY 68, APOLLO-RIDGE 67
SUMMIT ACADEMY 68, APOLLO-RIDGE 67: First-place Summit Academy erupted offensively in the fourth quarter and erased a 13-point deficit to best second-place Apollo-Ridge in a pivotal WPIAL Section 1-AA game in Spring Church.
The Vikings carried a 54-41 lead into the fourth, but Summit Academy (11-3, 6-0) responded and poured in 27 points in the fourth quarter to earn the come-from-behind win.
Freshman Duane Brown scored a career-high 24 points to lead Apollo-Ridge. Mitchell Johnston added 16 points, Alex Smith had 11, and Maurice Stankus chipped in 10.
The Vikings’ leading scorer, Tre Tipton, did not play. He remains out with an injury.
Apollo-Ridge (12-2, 4-2) travels to Burrell on Tuesday.
UNIONTOWN 75, DERRY 41: Host Uniontown jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead and then smothered Derry in the second half en route to a win in a WPIAL Section 3-AAA game.
Matt Vasinko scored 10 points to lead Derry.
The Trojans have lost two games in a row and six of their last seven.
Derry (3-9, 2-5) plays host to Southmoreland on Tuesday.
SALTSBURG 56, NORTHERN CAMBRIA 45: In a game played Thursday, three Saltsburg players reached double figures in scoring to help the Trojans grind out a win over host Northern Cambria in a Heritage Conference game.
Ben Shirley scored a career-high 13 points to lead Saltsburg. Steve Richards chipped in 12 points, Ian Satler scored 11 points, and Zach Sinclair grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
“I thought Ben Shirley and Frankie Plowman were key contributors off the bench for us,” Saltsburg coach Don Stitt Jr. said. “Satler and Richards had off nights, but Shirley and Plowman came through with some big shots. It was a good team win.”
Northern Cambria’s Seth Bearer led all scorers with 20 points.
Saltsburg (5-6, 3-4) plays host to United on Monday, and Northern Cambria (1-10, 1-6) welcomes United on Wednesday.
