HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Richards, Satler lead Saltsburg to victory

by The Indiana Gazette on February 07, 2014 10:40 AM

Saltsburg senior Steve Richards nailed a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left to lift the Trojans to a 58-56 win over visiting Ligonier Valley in a Heritage Conference boys’ basketball game Thursday.

With the game knotted 56-56 and less than a minute on the clock, the Rams moved the ball around until they put it in the hands of freshman Collin Smith with roughly 10 seconds to go.

Smith drove through the lane and missed a shot with less than five seconds to play.

Richards boxed out, grabbed the rebound and drew an over-the-back foul.

Richards coolly swished both free throws to essentially seal the win.

“There’s no doubt that’s who we wanted at the line there,” Saltsburg coach Don Stitt Jr. said. “To be honest, he’s had trouble at the line a couple times this year, but he’s been working really hard shooting free throws and tonight he was 6-for-6. ... He definitely came through in the clutch.”

Ligonier squandered a five-point halftime lead, 36-31, and was outscored 27-20 in the second half, including 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

Ian Satler paced the Trojans with 27 points. Richards added 20 points.

Smith scored a career-high 30 points to power Ligonier. Jordan Jones scored 13, and Jacob Nemeth added 10.

Both teams play tonight. Saltsburg (8-8, 6-6) plays host to Marion Center, and Ligonier Valley visits United.

PORTAGE 53, UNITED 51: Portage hit 2 of 4 free throws in the last five seconds and erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to nip United in a non-conference game.

The game was tied 51-51 when Portage’s Jake Swank was fouled with seven seconds left. He made the first of his two free throw attempts and missed the second.

United grabbed the rebound and moved the ball upcourt with roughly five seconds to play before committing a turnover.

A Portage player drew a foul with one second to play and made 1 of 2 free throw attempts to seal the win.

“They pushed the activity defensively and just chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter,” United coach Tyler Stokes said. “We turned some balls over and mismanaged some possessions and let them climb back in the game.”

Mike Gill scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for United.

United (7-11) plays host to Ligonier Valley this evening.

APOLLO-RIDGE 66, HARVEST BAPTIST 38: Four Apollo-Ridge players reached double figures in scoring and the Vikings handcuffed Harvest Baptist en route to a win in a non-conference game in Spring Church.

Apollo-Ridge’s Mitchell Johnston led all scorers with 14 points. Dom Schrecengost scored 13 points, and Duane Brown and Maurice Stankus added 12 apiece.

The Vikings (17-3, 8-2) visit Penns Manor on Monday.
