HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Vikings roll past raiders
Apollo-Ridge couldn’t seem to hold onto the football Saturday, but it didn’t matter as the Vikings rolled to an easy 41-16 victory over Riverview in a WPIAL Eastern Conference football game.
The Vikings (6-2) are set to face off with conference foe West Shamokin (6-2) on Friday in a regular-season finale matchup with playoff seeding implications. The two teams are tied for third place in the Eastern Conference with matching 5-2 league records.
Against Riverview, Apollo-Ridge quarterback Jesse Zelonka racked up 238 yards on the ground, 116 through the air and two touchdowns to lead the Vikings’ offense. Apollo-Ridge outgained Riverview, 463-171, in total yards and allowed just one Raiders completion.
Zelonka, who has yet to throw an interception through eight games this season, finished 6 of 13 passing.
The Vikings jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the half, and added 20 points in the final quarter. The score probably could’ve been more lopsided, but the Vikings coughed up four fumbles.
Ben Gemballa’s 3-yard run and Zelonka’s 92-yard score gave Apollo-Ridge a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Alex Smith added a 65-yard touchdown catch in the second.
Gemballa then had a 10-yard touchdown run, Lonny Wells scored from 6 yards out and Duane Brown capped the scoring with a 16-yard run for the Vikings, who finished with 347 rushing yards.
