HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: West Shamokin exits playoffs
MONESSEN — Clintell Gillaspie ran 18 times for 274 yards and three touchdowns to lead third-seeded and unbeaten Monessen to a 37-14 victory over 14th-seeded West Shamokin in the first round of the WPIAL Class A football playoff Friday night.
Alex Lasslo threw both touchdowns for West Shamokin (6-4). The first was a 69-yarder to Andrew Wingard and the second a 6-yarder to Adam Crise.
West Shamokin closed the season at 6-4, setting a school record for victories during its first winning campaign since the school was formed in 2000. The Wolves finished fourth in the Eastern Conference, losing only to the three teams above them in the standings: unbeaten North Catholic, once-beaten Avonworth and twice-beaten Apollo-Ridge.
Monessen, ranked eighth in the state, jumped out to an 18-0 lead on Javon Brown’s 21-yard run on the opening drive of the game and Gillaspie’s runs that covered 62 and 47 yards in the first quarter.
West Shamokin struck on the first play from the scrimmage in the second quarter on Lasslo’s 69-yard pass to Wingard.
Gillaspie made it 24-7 in third quarter on a 17-yard run,
West Shamokin responded with a 13-play, 70-yard drive that was capped by Lasslo’s 5-yard pass to Crise.
Lasslo completed 11 of 14 passes for 147 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
The Greyhounds closed the scoring in the fourth quarter on Rullo’s 15-yard pass to Gillaspie and Kayne Jackson’s 1-yard run with 50 seconds to play.
