HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Homer-Center duo too much for Comets

The Homer-Center tandem of Julia Buggey and Sydney Horel took over in the second half by scoring a combined 25 points to lift the Wildcats to a 61-48 win over Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference girls’ basketball game Thursday.

Buggey scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the second half, and Horel scored all of her 13 points after halftime, and the Wildcats outscored the Comets, 34-20, including 16-8 in the third quarter.

“They just found a bunch of ways to create for themselves and for each other,” Penns Manor assistant coach Becca Bowser said of Buggey and Horel.

Kristina Albright tacked on 14 points for Homer-Center.

Penns Manor’s Mary Roach had a double-double and racked up 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sarah DaBella added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Homer-Center (7-8, 4-6 conference) plays host to Blairsville on Saturday. Penns Manor (4-11, 2-8) travels to Purchase Line on Monday.


BLAIRSVILLE 67, UNITED 32: Laurel O’Barto scored a game-high 20 points, Chelsey Koren posted a double-double, and the first-place Bobcats shut down visiting United to earn a lopsided win in a Heritage Conference game.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead, 29-15, before scoring 22 points in the third quarter to carry a 25-point lead, 51-26, into the fourth.

O’Barto dished out a game-high eight assists, and Koren scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Nicole Boyer chipped in 10 points and five assists.

Eden Bloom scored 10 points to pace United.

Blairsville (13-1, 8-0) travels to Homer-Center on Saturday. United plays host to Purchase Line on Tuesday.


LIGONIER VALLEY 41, NORTHERN CAMBRIA 34: Ligonier Valley’s Olivia Miller and Taylor Rudnik each notched double-doubles, and the Rams handcuffed Northern Cambria to grind out a win in a Heritage Conference game.

Miller piled up 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Rudnik added 18 points and 11 boards.

Of the Rams’ 17 field goals, Rudnik made eight and Miller nailed seven.

Katie Baum scored 10 points to pace the Colts.

Both teams play Tuesday. Ligonier Valley plays host to Marion Center, and Northern Cambria travels to Blairsville.


APOLLO-RIDGE 48, DEER LAKES 33: Apollo-Ridge raced to an 18-point first-quarter lead and cruised past host Deer Lakes and secure a playoff berth in a WPIAL Section 1-AA game.

Julia DeMeno made three 3-point field goals and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Vikings. Ashley Emminger chipped in 14 points, and Brianna Fairman had 10. The Vikings snapped a five-game losing skid and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

Apollo-Ridge (10-6, 3-5) plays host to Leechburg on Monday.
