HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Mars beats Indiana in season opener
Mars piled up six extra-base hits, including three homers, and limited Indiana to four hits en route to a 13-1 win in the Indians’ season opener in a WPIAL Section 5-AAA softball game Friday at the Indiana Little League Complex.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Holli Sottile singled and doubled to pace Indiana. Adrian Smith cranked a solo homer.
Brooke Ruffner struck out two and walked three in a complete-game losing effort.
Indiana plays host to Ford City on Monday in its home opener.
HOMER-CENTER 16, NORTHERN CAMBRIA 0: Host Homer-Center outhit Northern Cambria 10-2 and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn an easy win in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to four innings due to the mercy rule.
Homer-Center’s Abbey Plowcha fired a two-hitter. She struck out seven and walked one.
Abby Yancy singled three times and drove in two runs to pace the Wildcats. Julia Buggey and Devan Townley each singled and doubled.
Homer-Center (1-1) travels to Ligonier Valley on Wednesday. Northern Cambria travels to Marion Center on Monday.
BLAIRSVILLE 11, PURCHASE LINE 0: Blairsville jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the third inning, which was plenty of run support for ace Emilie Okopal as the Bobcats rolled to a win over host Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game. The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Okopal tossed a two-hitter. She struck out nine and walked one.
Abby Peace singled and doubled to lead Blairsville.
Kara St. Clair struck out five, walked one and allowed one hit in two innings of relief.
Purchase Line (1-1) travels to United on Monday. Blairsville plays host to United on Wednesday.
