HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Blairsville bounces back from first loss
Blairsville jumped out to an 8-0 lead and rebounded from its first loss of the year with a lopsided 14-6 win over visiting Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game Friday.
Winning pitcher Emilie Okopal struck out 11, walked one and allowed eight hits. Okopal also stroked three singles.
Freshman Abbie Okopal, Emilie’s younger sister, smacked a two-run homer, her fifth of the year. Abby Peace and Nicole Himes each singled twice.
Emma Tomayko singled three times to lead Penns Manor.
Penns Manor’s Emilie Stupic struck out two and walked six in a complete-game effort. Stupic also singled twice.
The Bobcats (8-1) suffered their first loss on Monday, an 11-2 setback against once-beaten Marion Center.
Blairsville travels to Homer-Center today. Penns Manor plays host to Marion Center on Monday.
PURCHASE LINE 10, UNITED 0: Purchase Line’s Kira Smith tossed a one-hitter and got all the run support she needed in the first inning to topple United in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.
Smith struck out five and walked one. She also doubled, tripled and drove in three runs.
Mikhala Stover singled, doubled twice and scored three runs for the Red Dragons, who built a 4-0 lead in the first and never looked back.
Kara St. Clair singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs, and Koren McCullough singled and doubled.
United’s Hope Hixson allowed 11 hits in a complete-game effort.
Both teams play Monday. Purchase Line plays host to Homer-Center and United heads to Ferndale.
MARS 7, INDIANA 0: Indiana mustered just two hits in losing a WPIAL Section 5-AAA game.
Mars broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third, and the Planets blew it open with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Jenna Sybert’s three-run homer.
Adrian Smith doubled for Indiana.
Emily Farmer took the loss.
Indiana (2-11, 1-8 section) visits Highlands on Monday.
