HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: George leads Homer-Center past Penns Manor

Holly George homered and tossed a complete game to lift Homer-Center to a 21-7 win over host Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference softball game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule on Wednesday.

George went 2-for-4 and cranked a 280-foot solo homer. She also struck out seven, walked four and allowed seven hits to earn the win.

Homer-Center’s Abbey Ginter doubled twice, hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs. Alyssa Smyers singled twice and doubled, Abby Goldberg went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three stolen bases, Savanna Ahlborn singled twice and scored three runs, and Molly Zack singled and doubled.

For Penns Manor, Larkin Crowe and Madison Britton smacked two singles apiece.

Penns Manor (2-7) travels to Northern Cambria today. Homer-Center plays host to Marion Center on Friday.


PURCHASE LINE 10-21, UNITED 3-10: Purchase Line collected a combined 32 hits and 31 runs to sweep visiting United in a Heritage Conference doubleheader.

In the first game, the Red Dragons banged out 10 hits and scored three runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings to roll over the Lions.

Emily Woods doubled, hit an inside-the-park homer and drove in five runs to lead Purchase Line. Morgan Zometsky singled and doubled, and Madison Zometsky singled twice.

Winning pitcher Maddie Ober struck out five, walked one and allowed one earned run and six hits in a complete game.

Berkeley Sutton singled and doubled for the Lions.

The Red Dragons scored 11 runs in the sixth inning and amassed a season-high 22 hits to cruise to a win in the second game.

Morgan Zometsky singled, doubled, homered, scored three runs and drove in four runs to lead the Dragons. Madison Zometsky singled three times, doubled, scored four runs and drove in four runs, Lucy Lee and Gwyn Keith each singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs, Kristin Zurenko doubled, tripled, drove in two runs and scored two runs, and Veronica Scott singled twice.

Ober struck out six, walked seven and allowed four earned runs and 10 hits in a complete-game win. Ober also singled twice and scored four runs.

For United, Hope Hixson singled twice, and Samantha Safko struck out five and walked five in a complete-game losing effort.

Purchase Line travels to Blairsville today. United visits Penns Manor on Friday.


NORTHERN CAMBRIA 6, WEST SHAMOKIN 4: Northern Cambria scored six unanswered runs in between the second and sixth innings to outlast visiting West Shamokin in a Heritage Conference game.

For the Colts, Brianna Lieb singled three times, Nicole Bearer singled twice, and winning pitcher Kaitlynn Kudlawiec allowed five hits and no earned runs in four innings.

Northern Cambria plays host to Penns Manor today. West Shamokin welcomes Ligonier Valley on Friday.
