HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Homer-Center shuts out Ligonier
Homer-Center jumped out to an early lead in a pitchers’ duel and shut down Ligonier Valley to score a 3-0 win in a Heritage Conference softball game Tuesday at Floodway Park.
Freshman Morgan Buggey put Homer-Center on the board first when she laced a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. Buggey scored later in the inning on a groundout to make it a 3-0 game.
Although Homer-Center ace Abby Plowcha allowed runners in five of the next six innings, she managed to strand every one of them.
Jamie Wynn singled twice to lead Ligonier Valley. Kailee Lear threw a three-hitter in a losing effort. She struck out three and walked two.
Both teams play in the District 6 playoffs Thursday. Homer-Center (9-8), the No. 8 seed in Class A, will play host to Ferndale. Ligonier Valley, the No. 13 seed in Class AA, travels to No. 4 Bald Eagle Area.
BLAIRSVILLE 10, DERRY 3: Playoff-bound Blairsville bounced back from its second loss of the season and racked up 15 hits to thump visiting Derry in a non-conference game.
Emilie Okopal fired a two-hitter to get the win. Okopal struck out five and walked three. She also singled and doubled.
Cassidy Edmundson led Blairsville with two singles and a double. Nichole Bendis and Abby Peace each singled and doubled, and Shelby Oswald, Nicole Himes and Abbie Okopal each singled twice.
Blairsville (14-2, 13-2 conference), the No. 6 seed in Class AA, opens the District 6 playoffs at home against No. 11 Bishop McCort on Thursday. Derry concluded its season with a 1-13 record.
