HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Ligonier wins in last at-bat

Ligonier Valley’s Hannah Yeskey drove in the game-winning run with a ground ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the host Rams to a 5-4 win over Homer-Center in a Heritage Conference softball game Wednesday.

Homer-Center pitcher Abby Plowcha set the stage for Yeskey by walking three batters to load the bases. Yeskey then grounded into a fielder’s choice to drive in the game-winning run.

Kailee Lear struck out one and allowed one earned run to notch the win. Lear also singled and doubled.

Plowcha struck out one and allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort.

Both teams play today. Ligonier Valley (9-6) plays host to Northern Cambria, and Homer-Center (6-8) welcomes Penns Manor.


PURCHASE LINE 13, PENNS MANOR 0: Purchase Line’s Kira Smith pitched a gem and got more than enough run support to lead the Red Dragons past Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Smith fired a two-hitter. She struck out five and walked one.

Smith, Koren McCullough and Amanda Fetterman each singled and doubled for the Red Dragons.

Penns Manor’s Micayla Parfitt struck out seven, walked six and allowed nine hits in a complete-game effort.

Penns Manor travels to Homer-Center today.


WEST SHAMOKIN 16, APOLLO-RIDGE 6: West Shamokin racked up 13 hits and scored the game’s final six runs to rout visiting Apollo-Ridge in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game that was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.

Kelly Clowser singled and doubled twice to lead West Shamokin. Emilee Wilson singled three times, Tori Lowry singled and doubled, and Haley Buckley singled twice.

Brianna Faber struck out three and allowed eight hits in a complete-game win.

Dana Speranza and Mariah Laird each singled and tripled for the Vikings. Adrianna Martin singled twice.

Laird struck out three and walked six in a complete-game effort.

West Shamokin (5-9) and Apollo-Ridge (0-14) concluded their seasons.
