HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Stingers win 'tough' one
Marion Center ace Megan Risinger tossed a three-hitter and drove in three runs to power the Stingers to a 5-1 win over visiting Cambria Heights in a non-conference softball game Wednesday.
“That’s what we were looking for when we scheduled Cambria Heights,” Marion Center coach Ed Peterson said. “We wanted some tough non-conference teams on our schedule to give us some close games, and today we got one.”
Risinger struck out eight, walked one and surrendered three singles. She also went 3-for-3 with a double.
Laken Ryen singled, doubled and scored three times for the Stingers.
Marion Center (2-0) plays host to Ligonier Valley on Friday.
PURCHASE LINE 9, PENNS MANOR 2: Purchase Line’s Kira Smith tossed a gem and the host Red Dragons scored the game’s last eight runs to beat winless Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game.
Smith tossed a four-hitter. She struck out 13 and walked one.
Kara St. Clair doubled twice and singled for Purchase Line. Amanda Fetterman singled and doubled, and Koren McCullough and Tessa Ankeny each singled twice.
Both teams play Friday. Purchase Line (3-1) plays host to Homer-Center, and Penns Manor (0-4) travels to United.
BLAIRSVILLE 10, UNITED 0: Blairsville’s Emilie Okopal tossed a three-hitter and smacked a three-run home run to lift the Bobcats to a win over United in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Okopal struck out five and walked none. She finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs.
Both teams play today. Blairsville (3-0) visits Northern Cambria, and United plays host to Penns Manor.
RIVERVIEW 18, APOLLO-RIDGE 1: Apollo-Ridge mustered just three hits, committed three errors and surrendered 14 walks to fall to Riverview in a WPIAL non-section home game that was shortened to four innings due to the mercy rule.
Losing pitcher Dana Speranza allowed four hits in a complete-game effort.
Apollo-Ridge (0-4) plays host to Burrell today.
