HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Marion Center's Crook, Heberling score big wins
Marion Center senior Phil Crook notched his 100th career win, Brandon Heberling became the school’s all-time leader in wins, and the Stingers upset visiting Blairsville, 39-31, in a Heritage Conference wrestling match Thursday.
Crook (160 pounds), a two-time Southwest Regional tournament qualifier, won by forfeit to notch his 100th career win and improve to 12-1 on the year.
Heberling (138) pinned Blairsville’s Jake Swiencki in 30 seconds and recorded his 109th win to break the school’s all-time wins record, which was set by former state champ Cam Plocus between 1994 and 1998.
On Jan. 15, Heberling scored his 66th pin to shatter Matt Olszewski’s all-time pins record at Marion Center.
“There’s not much difference between Brandon and Phil,” Marion Center coach Chris Stewart said. “They’re both seniors and they’ve both done a wonderful job for us. They definitely deserve the honors.”
Tyler Zapach (106), David Wiles (120) and Isaac Stewart (145) each won by fall for Marion Center. Erik Hicks (113), Challen Cornetto (126) and Joe Brendle (132) each won by decision.
Drew Doak (152) won by fall to lead Blairsville. Nick Pecze (182) and Jake Smith (220) each won by decision.
Marion Center and Blairsville each qualified for the District 6 playoffs. The Stingers (8-10) garnered the 18th seed, and the Bobcats (7-3) plucked the sixth seed.
Both teams compete Tuesday. Blairsville travels to Penns Valley and Marion Center plays host to West Shamokin.
