HS BASEBALL: Homer-Center uses big innings to whip Colts
Homer-Center used two seven-run innings to pull away for an 18-10 victory over host Northern Cambria in a Heritage Conference baseball game Friday.
After allowing two first-inning runs, the Wildcats scored seven in the top of the second, plating three on Nate Wilden’s triple and two on Darren Carr’s single.
Northern Cambria regained the lead, 8-7, with six runs of its own in the bottom of the second, sparked by Josh Bonatesta’s three-run home run.
Homer-Center took back the lead in the middle innings and broke the game open with seven more runs in the sixth, keyed by Bryan Buzi’s grand slam.
Matt Jones went 4-for-5 with two doubles for Homer-Center, and Wilden added three hits. Anthony Caruso earned the complete-game win.
Bonatesta, Joe Olish and Josh Prasko had two hits each for the Colts. Adam Polites, Joe Frontino and Matt Eckenrode ripped doubles, and Olish scored three runs.
HOLLIDAYSBURG 6, INDIANA 1: Indiana suffered its second consecutive loss after three season-opening wins, falling to a tough Hollidaysburg team in a non-conference game in the Curve Classic at Altoona’s Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Danny Clark struck out eight and walked three in 5 2-3 innings and added two doubles to help his cause, but Indiana managed just five hits total.
“He battled out there,” Indiana coach Rob Stossel said. “He worked ahead and did a good job changing speeds.”
SALTSBURG 14, MARION CENTER 4: Saltsburg got to Marion Center early and ran away with its first win of the season, beating the Stingers in a Heritage Conference home game for the Trojans that was played at the White Township Recreation Complex.
Adam Deruelle, Brody Bieda and Doug Pollack had two hits each for Saltsburg, and Lucas Mowery, Bieda, Ian Satler, Bryce Zimmerman and Tanner Yard scored three runs apiece. Deruelle doubled and drove in three runs. Tanner Yard added a double, and Pollack also had three RBIs.
C.J. Stiles had two hits for Marion Center.
BLAIRSVILLE 12, PURCHASE LINE 2: Host Blairsville knocked the wind out of Purchase Line early and then handcuffed the Red Dragons en route to an easy win in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Scott Thompson singled, scored two runs and drove in two runs, Aaron Smith singled, scored a run and drove in two runs, and Reed Ratkus scored two runs.
Colton McMillan struck out one and walked three in one inning to earn the win.
PENNS MANOR 11, BLACKLICK VALLEY 0: Penns Manor turned its five hits into 11 runs in a shutout victory in a non-conference game in Clymer shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Luke Ruddock went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and Lucas Kowalski added a double. Christian Eckenrode and Mitch Hamilton scored two runs each.
Kasey Jewart struck out four and walked four in three innings to pick up the win.
DERRY 4, YOUGH 3: Derry’s Johnny Panizzi drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth inning, lifting the Trojans to a win over Yough in a WPIAL 2-AAA game at Grandview Field.
Panizzi went 2-for-4, and Zack Zimmerman finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Wege struck out one in three innings of relief to earn the win.
DEER LAKES 15, APOLLO-RIDGE 7: Deer Lakes defeated Apollo-Ridge in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game in Russellton. Sam Held belted a home run to lead Apollo-Ridge. Mitchell Johnson tripled, and Brady Neal doubled. Pitcehr Mike Percic suffered the loss.
