HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Ligonier Valley's Elliott fans 19 in victory

Ligonier Valley pitcher Billy Elliott racked up 19 strikeouts in eight innings and picked up the win after the Rams scored seven runs in the top of the eighth of an 8-1 victory over Homer-Center in a Heritage Conference baseball game Wednesday at First Commonwealth Field.

Elliott allowed one run on three hits in eight innings. He walked three.

Homer-Center starter Matt Jones went 6 1-3 innings, striking out five and walking three, dueling Elliott for the better part of the game and getting a no-decision.

Ryan Torrance doubled and scored the winning run in the eighth, and the Rams added five straight hits in the inning to extend their lead. Torrance, Ty Ferlin, Luke Ferlin and Matt Ryan had two hits each for Ligonier Valley.

Both teams play games Friday. Ligonier Valley (4-0, 4-0) welcomes Marion Center, and Homer-Center (3-2, 3-2) plays host to Purchase Line.


PENNS MANOR 14, PURCHASE LINE 5: Visiting Penns Manor jumped on winless Purchase Line early and amassed 14 hits to roll to an easy win in a Heritage Conference game shortened to 6½ innings due to inclement weather.

The Comets trailed 4-3 in the second inning but pulled away by plating five runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Purchase Line mustered just four hits and committed six errors.

Luke Kowalski paced Penns Manor by going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Luke Ruddock doubled twice, Christian Eckenrode singled twice and drove in two runs, and Adam Tomayko singled twice and drove in a run.

Kasey Jewart drove in two runs, and Chad Pantall singled twice.

Clayton Stupic struck out six and walked three in three innings to pick up the win.

Mike Cramer, who hit a solo homer, finished 2-for-3 for Purchase Line.

Purchase Line (0-4) travels to Homer-Center on Friday, and Penns Manor plays host to Marion Center today.


DERRY 5, UNIONTOWN 1: Derry broke open a one-run game and mounted a big rally in the sixth inning to upend Uniontown in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA game at Grandview Field.

The Trojans were nursing a 2-1 lead before plating three runs on four hits. Johnny Panizzi and Luke Ridilla each smacked RBI singles in the inning.

Panizzi finished 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Connor Wege singled twice and drove in a run.

Winning pitcher Joey Kelly struck out one and allowed two hits in six innings.

Derry (5-1, 4-0 section) plays host to Greensburg Central Catholic on Friday.
