H.S. FOOTBALL: Chucks can't overtake St. Marys
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney’s defense did a respectable job against St. Marys’ Alex Feldbauer, but the offense didn’t hold up its end of the bargain in a 12-6 loss in a non-conference football game Friday night.
Feldbauer entered the game with nearly 800 rushing yards in four games this season. The Chucks held him to 114, but Feldbauer scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, and quarterback Nick Cunningham passed for 112 yards and a 4-yard touchdown strike to Tyler Yetzer that put the Dutch in the lead in the fourth quarter.
St. Marys held a 6-0 lead after Feldbauser scored and took that lead into halftime.
Punxsutawney answered on the first possession of the second half, scoring on Matt Burkett’s 12-yard pass to Dakota Byers.
The Chucks missed several opportunities to score, including twice in the first half after driving into St. Marys territory. Then in the third quarter, Burkett was intercepted in the end zone.
St. Marys took the lead with 6:52 left and then intercepted Burkett again.
Punxs’y forced a turnover on downs with 1:22 left, and the Chucks moved from their 17 into St. Marys territory, but they ran out of time.
St. Mary’s (4-1) held Punxs’y running back Christian Falgout to 36 yards.
The Chucks (2-3) play at Clarion-Limestone on Friday.
