KENWOOD — Penns Manor pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback, then hung on by the skin of its teeth, beating Northern Cambria, 21-20, in a classic opening-night Heritage Conference football game Friday at Pat Corrigan Field.

The Comets trailed 14-7 entering the fourth quarter but engineered two scoring drives capped by Lucas Kowalski touchdown runs of 62 and 17 yards, respectively, to pull ahead, 21-14.

Northern Cambria’s Mac Novella returned the ensuing kickoff 69 yards, setting the Colts up at the Penns Manor 9-yard line with 2:37 to play, and quarterback Dartagnan Suchar scored on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-goal.

On Northern Cambria’s third time lining up for the extra point, Suchar was stacked up at the goal line to preserve the Penns Manor lead.

The Colts originally lined up to kick, but, taking their time, managed to call timeout just before the play clock expired. After the break Northern Cambria came out and ran the ball. Kowalski stopped Tyler Pershing but was flagged for grabbing the facemask. Penns Manor’s stout defensive front stopped Suchar on the next attempt, after the ball was moved up to the 1½-yard line.

Penns Manor’s Louie Tate scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to open the scoring.

Nolan Paronish scored on a 50-yard run to pull Northern Cambria within 7-6 going into the half. The Colts pulled ahead, 14-7, when Suchar scored from 2 yards, then ran it in again for the two-point conversion.

Kowalski finished with a game-high 157 yards rushing, 104 of which came in the second half.

Suchar led Northern Cambria, running for 93 yards, and Nolan Paronish gained 86.
