H.S. FOOTBALL: Punxs'y rolls over Union
On a night when Punxsutawney honored the unbeaten 1963 team of 50 years ago, the modern-day Chucks rode the emotion of the evening to a 34-18 win over Union in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference game at Jack LaMarca Stadium.
Punxsutawney scored on its first two possessions to set the early tone and never looked back en route to the first win of the season that evened the Chucks’ record at 1-1.
Christian Falgout put the Chucks on the board on the first possession of the game, scoring on a 1-yard plunge on his seventh carry of the series. He set up the second touchdown with 21- and 17-yard runs, and Dakota Thomas hit Parker Weaver on a halfback option play that covered 49 yards.
Trailing 14-0, Union scored in the second quarter on Lane Cicciarelli’s 11-yard pass to Shane Murphy, setting the score at 14-6 going into halftime.
Punxs’y started the second half with the same momentum the Chucks found on the opening drive, this time using it on defense to force three negative plays. Then quarterback Matt Burkett hit Falgout on a 6-yard pass off play action to put the Chucks up 21-6.
Falgout put his team up 28-6 when he scored on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
After Union answered on Cicciarelli’s 50-yard strike to Murphy, Falgout chalked up his fourth touchdown of the game for a 34-12 lead. Falgout finished with 186 yards on 32 carries.
Union closed the scoring on Cicciarelli’s 2-yard pass to Murphy.
Punxs’y plays at DuBois on Friday.
