H.S. FOOTBALL: West Mifflin 21, Indiana 14

on October 11, 2013 10:45 PM

Upset-minded Indiana built a 14-point lead in the first quarter and competed valiantly with undefeated West Mifflin, but the Indians fell short in their upset bid in a WPIAL non-conference football game at Andy Kuzneski Field on Friday.

Sophomore quarterback Jacob Zilinskas, making his first varsity start in place of injured starter Sean Thompson, threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Riley Stapleton and 76 yards to Darrious Carter as Indiana bolted to a 14-0 lead with 2:37 to play in the first quarter.

But the Indians didn’t score again, and West Mifflin slowly chipped away at the lead on the shoulders of running back Jimmy Wheeler, who carried the ball 39 times for 215 yards and scored two touchdowns.

The Titans (7-0) trailed until Wheeler’s 26-yard touchdown run with 8:49 to play in the game. He also scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter for the Titans’ first points.

Indiana took a 14-7 lead into halftime after stopping West Mifflin at its 2-yard line as time ran out in the first half.

The Titans scored on their opening drive of the second half but missed the extra point, and Indiana held a 14-13 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Indians had a fruitless 13-play drive that reached the West Mifflin 15 in the second half but didn’t produce any points, and the Indians lost three fumbles.

West Mifflin came back with a 12-play drive, capped by Wheeler’s 26-yard touchdown, to finally climb out of the early hole.
