HS SOFTBALL: Penns Manor scores victory
NORTHERN CAMBRIA — Penns Manor drew 11 walks, and Comets pitcher Megan McCunn allowed none as Penns Manor rolled over host Northern Cambria, 9-2, in a Heritage Conference softball game Wednesday.
McCunn struck out nine in seven innings for the win, adding two hits, a run and two RBIs. Alaina Laverick also had two hits for Penns Manor.
Jenna Lecorchick smacked two hits for the Colts.
Penns Manor (5-9) visits Blairsville today, and Northern Cambria (7-11) concludes its season against Ligonier Valley at home Monday.
Indiana closes with loss
LOWER BURRELL — Indiana closed its season with a 9-4 loss to Burrell in a WPIAL non-section girls’ softball game Wednesday.
The Indians finished at 8-10, dropping four of their last five games.
Kaitlyn Palmer slugged a two-run home run for Indiana in the fifth inning. She finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Indiana’s Brooke Ruffner struck out one and walked one.
Yard leads YT in opener
WEST LEBANON — Tanner Yard tossed a four-hit shutout for Young Township in a 6-0 victory over Derry in the Indiana County Youth Legion baseball opener for both teams Wednesday.
Yard struck out seven and did not issue a walk in five innings. He also went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two RBIs. Aaron Gray added a double.
Zac Blystone doubled for Derry.
Devin Siko took the loss, striking out five and walking four in four innings.
Young Township visits I-Medical on Friday, and Derry plays host to I-Medical on Monday.
IJHS wins 11 medals
PLUM — Abby Myers and Jess Stever set Indiana Junior High School records, and the Indiana seventh- and eighth-grade track and field teams earned 11 medals at the Plum Invitational on Wednesday.
Myers finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 30.6 seconds, for a school mark, and Stever ran the 200 in 26.8 seconds.
Stever finished first in the high jump, Myers won the triple jump, and Indiana’s 1,600 relay team of Kacey Blair, Becca Olechovski, Stever and Myers also took first.
Stever also won a medal in the 400. The other medalists were Olechovski (triple jump) and Sarah Coffman (discus).
Bobby Bell earned medals in the shot put and discus and Dakota Gunsallus in the hurdles for the Indiana boys.
Indiana soccer teams win five
Indiana Area Soccer Boosters teams went 5-1-2 over the weekend.
The Lightning U-10 girls beat Hempfield, 6-1, with three goals from Emily Sebring, two from Isabella Garzarelli and one from Alicia Mitchell. Garzarelli added an assist, and Emily Scherl played in goal.
The U-10 Blackhawks boys’ team beat Loyalhanna Black, 5-2, behind Vince Belice’s hat trick. Isaac Myers and Noah Grattan added a goal each, and Jack Mock and Nickolas Detwiler had assists. Mock and Dominic Groman split time in goal.
The U-14 team tied Murrysville, 1-1. Matt Corjelko’s scored the tying goal and Drew Hastings played in goal.
The U-10 Red Hawks defeated Norwin, 3-1. Aaron McKelvy scored twice and Trent White added a goal. McKelvy, Ethan Black and Evan Jackson contributed assists, and McKelvy and Jack Turner played in goal.
The girls’ U-12 Thunder beat Monroeville, 4-1, to remain undefeated. Grace Mullen scored all four goals, also splitting time with Gabriella Spadafora in goal.
The U-12 Red Hawks lost to Hempfield, 3-2. Isaac ArguetaValle and Cian Williamson-Rea scored goals, and Williamson-Rea, ArguetaValle and Veronika Voldopyanova played in goal.
The U-12 Blackhawks beat Hempfield, 5-1, with two goals each from Hunter Takach and Jameson Kutz and one from Walker Raykes. Sam Meil, Caleb Hockenberry, Kutz and Takach added assists. Meil and Luke Ciocca played in goal.
The over-40 team tied Mon Valley United, 1-1. Bryan Wilkins scored Indiana’s goal on a header from a centering pass from Pete Cefalu. Kevin Kerr was the goalkeeper.
Lacrosse team scores win
The Indiana under-13 girls’ lacrosse team defeated Peters Township, 7-4, at Miller Stadium on Sunday, and the under-15 squad lost, 8-7.
Clara Sherwood scored two goals, and Carlie Glavach, Avery Redd, Adrianna Guth-Borowski, Autumn Jones and Hannah Ushock added one each for the U-13 team.
Goaltender Keegan Fulton-Schuller made five saves. Jones led the defense with five ground balls.
Chrissy Conklin scored four goals for the U-15 team. Logan Everett scored two, and Michaela Hays added one.
Everett also picked up six ground balls, and Megan Lydick had three. Autumn Jones made seven saves.
Spidell places in half-marathon
Cory Spidell, a Marion Center High School graduate, placed 16th in the Pittsburgh Half-Marathon on Sunday.
Spidell posted a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 48 seconds, which is 45 seconds faster than his third-place finish from a year ago. He was the first runner from Pennsylvania to finish the race.
McDonald’s wins in Little League
McDonald’s defeated Delaney, 4-0, in an Indiana Little League baseball game Saturday at IRMC Field.
Luke Thomas struck out 12 and allowed three hits in the shutout. Axel Kovalchick went 2-for-3.
Jarrett Defoor, Conner Montgomery and Ryan Putt had hits for Delaney.
Berringer scores hole-in-one
George Berringer scored a hole-in-one on No. 12 at Meadow Lane Golf Course on Tuesday.
The witnesses were Joe Kochman, Gerson Bence and Roy Wheeler.
Ladies’ golfers name winners
The winners in the Indian Springs Ladies Tuesday Morning League’s scramble were Michele Skultety, Barb Worford, Barb Cerovich and Cherise Cunningham.
Loretta Lowman won chippies and birdies. Peggy Marshall had a chip-in.
• Kathy Whitesell and Kathy Glassford tied in the 1-30 handicap group and Theresa Wise won the 31-40 handicap division outright in the Meadow Lane Ladies’ 18-Hole Golf League’s T’s and F’s event Wednesday.
Flora Isenberg won the special event, with most drives in the fairway.
Glassford won special prizes for birdies on Nos. 5 and 8.
IUP slates basketball camps
The IUP men’s basketball program will hold summer camps on June 24 to 27 and July 22 to 25.
The camps are for players ages 7 to 17.
