HS SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Blairsville ends Ligonier's conference streak
Blairsville handed Ligonier Valley its first Heritage Conference loss in six years, and the Bobcats remained undefeated on the season, edging the Rams, 1-0, in a high school softball game Monday in Ligonier.
Abby Peace doubled in the fifth inning, and Cassidy Edmundson doubled her in, scoring the game’s only run and accounting for two of Blairsville’s four hits.
Emilie Okopal tossed a one-hitter, striking out 12 and walking four in seven innings.
“Emilie was right on her game with 12 strikeouts,” Blairsville coach Frank Harsh said. “We played good defense, but with 12 Ks, there’s not a whole lot of defense. She just pitched a heck of a game.”
Ligonier’s Hailey Umbaugh struck out four and did not issue a walk in seven innings.
Both teams play Wednesday. Blairsville (6-0) welcomes Marion Center (5-1), and Ligonier Valley (4-1) travels to Purchase Line.
INDIANA 16, FREEPORT 6: Indiana pulled its winning percentage up to .500 with a victory over Freeport in a WPIAL non-section game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule at the Indiana Little League Complex. It was Indiana’s fourth annual Under the Lights Charity Game.
Kaitlyn Palmer went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Dana Piper and Brianna Dillon each went 3-for-4. Piper cracked two doubles and Dillon added one. Dillon drove in three runs.
Brooke Ruffner struck out three and walked one in five innings.
Indiana (5-5) visits Knoch today.
MARION CENTER 12, HOMER-CENTER 2: Four Marion Center players had two hits or more, and the Stingers bounced back from their first loss of the season by thumping Homer-Center in a Heritage Conference game at Floodway Park. The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Marion Center jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and then plated seven runs on five hits and a walk in the second to extend its lead to 10-0.
Kimmi Donaldson paced the Stingers with three singles. Heidi Peterson and Morgan Tonkin each had two singles and two RBIs.
Winning pitcher Megan Risinger fired a four-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none. Risinger also singled twice and drove in a run.
Allison Kishlock singled and doubled for Homer-Center.
Homer-Center’s Abby Plowcha struck out five, walked one and allowed 10 hits in a complete-game effort.
Marion Center (5-1) plays host to Homer-Center (2-4) today.
NORTHERN CAMBRIA 17, UNITED 2: Northern Cambria plated 12 runs in the second inning and rolled to a win in a Heritage Conference game shortened to three innings.
Ashley Farabaugh drove in two runs, Bre Sabella smacked a triple, and Paige Benton added a double for the Colts.
Lakyn Fornari picked up the win, striking out one and walking none in two innings.
Lyda Bartlebaugh had two hits for United.
Northern Cambria (5-4, 3-4) welcomes Purchase Line for a doubleheader today, and United (0-5) visits Penns Manor on Thursday.
GLENDALE 5, PENNS MANOR 4: Glendale mustered just three hits off Megan McCunn but used a four-run rally in the third inning to nip Penns Manor in a non-conference game in Kenwood.
McCunn struck out nine and walked four.
Penns Manor (2-4) travels to Northern Cambria on Wednesday.
WEST SHAMOKIN 9, VALLEY 8: West Shamokin erased a late deficit and snapped a five-game losing skid with a win over Valley in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game in New Kensington.
The Wolves trailed 8-3 before plating six runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead.
Kelly Clowser led the Wolves with two singles and two RBIs. Danielle Smith singled and drove in three runs. Lexie Claypoole singled in a run.
Winning pitcher Alecia Calhoun tossed a three-hitter. She struck out three and walked nine.
West Shamokin (3-8, 3-6 section) travels to Shady Side Academy today.
RIVERVIEW 18, APOLLO-RIDGE 7: Apollo-Ridge out-hit Riverview 15-6 but lost by 11 runs in a WPIAL non-section game in Oakmont shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.
Taylor Dilick went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple for Apollo-Ridge. Andrea Hancock had two hits, including a home run, and Sarah Stiffey added a triple.
Apollo-Ridge (3-7) visits Deer Lakes today.
