HS SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Indiana falls on the road

Highlands used two big innings to upend Indiana, 9-5, in a WPIAL Section 5-AAA softball game Tuesday in Natrona Heights.

The Rams scored four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 9-2 lead.

The Indians got a run back in the sixth and scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap, but fell short for their second straight loss.

Adrain Smith doubled twice and scored a run to lead Indiana. Bethany Balencic singled, doubled, scored a run and drove in a run, and Brianna Dillon singled twice, scored a run and drove in a run.

Losing pitcher Brooke Ruffner struck out three and walked one in 4 2-3 innings.

Indiana (1-3) plays host to Kittanning on Wednesday.


WEST SHAMOKIN 5, APOLLO-RIDGE 4: West Shamokin plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to edge Apollo-Ridge in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game in Spring Church.

Jenn Notto paced West Shamokin with a single, a triple and an RBI. Kelly Clowser singled twice, drove in two runs and stole a base, and Stephanie Shreckengost singled and stole three bases.

Winning pitcher Alecia Calhoun struck out six and walked two in a complete-game.

Ashley Emminger struck out four and walked three in a complete-game losing effort for Apollo-Ridge. Emminger also doubled and tripled.

West Shamokin (2-3) travels to Valley today. Apollo-Ridge (0-3) plays host to Freeport on Thursday.
