HS SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Risinger, Stingers roll in tune-up

Megan Risinger struck out 10 and gave up one hit in host Marion Center’s 15-0 victory over United in a four-inning, mercy-rule-shortened Heritage Conference game. The Stingers improved to 4-0, 3-0 in the Heritage Conference, going into today’s home game with undefeated Blairsville.

Risinger allowed just one walk and picked up the win. She also collected three extra-base hits at the plate,with two doubles and a triple.

Kim Donaldson tripled twice, and Heidi Peterson, Morgan Tonkin and Sammie Frye added two hits each. Tonkin and Hannah Peterson each had doubles.

Leah Magalich did not register a strikeout, walked four and took the loss for the Lions.

United travels to Conemaugh Valley on Friday.


INDIANA 13, WEST SHAMOKIN 0: Kaitlyn Palmer’s first-inning solo home run set the tone for her day, and she added a double to finish 3-for-3 in Indiana’s rout of West Shamokin in a WPIAL non-section game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Sarah Freehling added two doubles, and Bethany Balencic clubbed another for the Indians.

Brooke Ruffner struck out two and walked one in five innings for the win.

Stephanie Schrecengost struck out one and walked six in four innings to take the loss for the Wolves.

Both teams play home games today. Indiana (3-5) welcomes Hampton, and West Shamokin (2-7) plays host to Freeport.


LIGONIER VALLEY 13, NORTHERN CAMBRIA 0: Ligonier Valley banged out 13 hits and provided ace Hailey Umbaugh with plenty of run support to earn an easy win over visiting Northern Cambria in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Rams jumped out to an 8-0 second-inning lead before plating two runs in the top of the fourth and three in the fifth to enforce the mercy rule.

Maddy Grimm paced Ligonier Valley by going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Breanne Wallace singled, doubled and drove in three runs, and Courtney Frappier had two hits, including a double.

Umbaugh fired a two-hitter, striking out five and walking one.

Both teams play on the road tomorrow. Ligonier Valley travels to Pine-Richland, and Northern Cambria heads to Penns Manor.


PENNS MANOR 14, HOMER-CENTER 9: Penns Manor capitalized on Homer-Center’s three errors and scored five runs over the last two innings to pull away for a win in a back-and-forth Heritage Conference game at Floodway Park.

Penns Manor plated two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman in the top of the sixth to take an 11-5 lead.

Homer-Center trimmed the lead to two runs by scoring four in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 11-9 game.

The Comets responded, however, and plated three runs on two hits and two errors in the seventh to build a 14-9 lead.

Kaylin Templeton led Penns Manor with three singles and four runs scored, and Emma Tomayko singled twice and also scored four times.

Annette Marshall, Alaina Laverick and Emily Stupic and Adel Plavi had two hits apiece for Penns Manor, with Marshall, Laverick and Stupic registering doubles.

Megan McCunn struck out 11, walked five and allowed seven hits in a complete-game win.

Steph Nehrig singled twice, tripled and drove in three runs to lead Homer-Center.

Abby Plowcha struck out seven, walked five and allowed nine hits in a complete-game losing effort.

Homer-Center (2-3) plays host to Marion Center on Monday. Penns Manor welcomes Northern Cambria today.


VALLEY 19, APOLLO-RIDGE 7: Apollo-Ridge dropped the first end of back-to-back games against WPIAL Section 3-AA foe Valley, dropping a six-inning contest shortened by the mercy rule in Spring Church.

Sammy Geracia cracked a double for the Vikings. Dana Speranza struck out four, but walked seven in six innings to take the loss.

Apollo-Ridge (2-6, 2-5) visits Valley today to conclude the home-and-home series.
