HS TRACK AND FIELD: Indiana bows out of WPIAL team playoffs
Needing to beat each of its four opponents, the Indiana boys’ track and field team won just one of four meets in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinal round Wednesday at West Mifflin High School.
Indiana defeated Uniontown, 78-52, but fell to Gateway, 102-48, West Mifflin, 84-61, and South Fayette, 78-72.
Corey Denlinger won the javelin (178 feet), Dakota Harper took the pole vault (14-3), and Sam Stever placed first in the discus (126-0).
Also, the 3,200 relay team, which consisted of Darrious Carter, Adam Lenze, Ryan Louther and Cole Rosenberger, placed first with a time of 8:15.1.
The Indiana boys’ team, which finished second in WPIAL Section 1-AAA in the regular season, concluded its season with a 6-4 record.
Indiana travels to the West Central Coaches Invitational at Altoona’s Mansion Park on Friday.
TROJANS SWEEP COLTS, DRAGONS: Saltsburg swept Northern Cambria, 103-43, and Purchase Line, 114-27, in the girls’ portion of a Heritage Conference triangular meet.
The Saltsburg boys defeated Purchase Line, 78-63, but lost to Northern Cambria, 76-74.
The Northern Cambria girls beat Purchase Line, 93-52, and the boys defeated Purchase Line, 85-65.
Kia Clayton paced the Saltsburg girls, winning the high jump, long jump and triple jump, and Jessica Clayton took the 100 and ran on the winning 400 relay team with Nicole Boyer, Corrine Moore and Michaela Simpson.
The 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams each placed first. The 3,200 relay team consisted of Allyson Smathers, Chelsey Koren, Olivia Satler and Taylor Koches, and the 1,600 relay team was made up of Lisa Prenni, Bayli Zimmerman, Boyer and Koren.
Zimmerman added wins in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Koren took the 400, Simpson placed first in the 200, Ashton Battestilli finished first in the javelin, and Moore won the shot put.
Allyson Kopera won the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200 to lead Northern Cambria. Adrienne Tubo won the pole vault, and Mikaela Gobrecht took the discus.
Winners for the Northern Cambria boys were Derek Bearer (400), Mike Sowalla (300 hurdles), Gus Yahner (pole vault), Evan Ludwig (javelin) and Tyler Olish (high jump). Also, the 400 relay team, which consisted of Seth Bearer, Derek Bearer, Erick Jennings and Allen Bacho, placed first.
Deion Robinson and Travis Massera each won a pair of events to pace Saltsburg. Robinson won the 100 and 200, and Massera took the long jump and triple jump. Ryan Horchar added a win in the 3,200.
Joe Price won the shot put and the discus for Purchase Line. Alec Sunderlin won the 110 hurdles, Taylor Antisdel took the 1,600, and Dustin Karadus placed first in the 800.
Northern Cambria and Penns Manor travel to the West Central Coaches Invitational at Altoona’s Mansion Park on Friday.
