HS TRACK & FIELD: IHS sends nine to WPIALs

IRWIN — Indiana High School had nine individuals and two relay teams qualify for the WPIAL Championships with top-eight finishes at the Class AAA Central Qualifier on Tuesday at Norwin High School.

Darnae Clemons led the Indiana boys by qualifying in the high jump (first place, 6 feet, 1 inch) and long jump (20-10). Dakota Harper (pole vault, 12-6) and Corey Denlinger (javelin, 178) also took first place in qualifying.

Darrious Carter (triple jump), Adam Lenze (800) and Ryan Louther (1,600) also qualified individually. Indiana’s 3,200 relay team of Carter, Cole Rosenberger, Lenze and Louther also qualified.

Abbey Karcher (high jump), Aaryn Gray (javelin) and Jessica Hurley (400) qualified for the girls’ team.

The 1,600 relay team of Hurley, Marrissa Cunningham, Kacey Raible and Lauren Peightal also qualified.

The WPIAL meet is Thursday, May 16, at Baldwin High School.

Spidell places in half-marathon

Cory Spidell, a Marion Center High School graduate, placed 16th in the Pittsburgh Half-Marathon on Sunday.

Spidell posted a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 48 seconds, which is 45 seconds faster than his third-place finish from a year ago. He was the first runner from Pennsylvania to finish the race.

McDonald’s scores LL win

McDonald’s defeated Delaney, 4-0, in an Indiana Little League baseball game Saturday at IRMC Field.

Luke Thomas struck out 12 and allowed three hits in the shutout. Axel Kovalchick went 2-for-3.

Jarrett Defoor, Conner Montgomery and Ryan Putt had hits for Delaney.

Gilgal wins third straight

Gilgal Presbyterian improved to 3-0 by defeating Grace Methodist I, 24-9, in an Indiana County Church League softball game Tuesday night.

Ben Harley had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs to pace Gilgal. Jeff Cribbs, the winning pitcher, also had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Jason Canose slugged a two-run home run and had two hits, and George Campbell had two singles and three RBIs.

Greg Karlovich smacked two homers and Brett Shaeffer added one for Grace I.

Indiana defeats Kiski School

Indiana defeated the Kiski School, 11-0, in a five-inning, mercy-rule-shortened junior varsity baseball game Tuesday.

Cameron Allmendinger struck out nine and allowed two hits in a complete-game win. Johan Schall and Cory Hotchkiss had two hits each for Indiana, and Gray Smith slugged a home run.

Indiana travels to Hollidaysburg on Thursday.

Indiana JVs win fourth straight

The Indiana High School junior varsity lacrosse team won its fourth straight match, defeating Butler, 5-4, on Tuesday evening.

C.J. Hughes scored four goals for the Indians, and Dylan Kane added another. Ryan Hoff, Tyler Mulac and Tyler Barker each had assists.

Indiana (9-2) plays host to Latrobe in its home finale Thursday.
