ICL BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Colts stay in control

First-place Blairsville bested host Apollo in every facet of the game and continued to pull away from the pack at the top of the standings with its fourth straight win, a 12-2 victory in an Indiana County League baseball game Sunday.

The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Colts added to their early 2-1 lead by scoring six runs on five hits, two walks and two errors in the top of the second inning to make it an 8-1 game. Scott Harsh sparked the rally with a two-run home run.

“A lot of teams are playing catch-up because we have the most games played,” Blairsville player-manager Joe Culler said.

“We’ve just got to keep winning. As long as we keep winning, we’ll control our own fate.”

Harsh paced Blairsville by going 3-for-4. Lucas Palmer doubled and drove in two runs, and Ben Doak singled and drove in two runs.

Doak struck out two, walked two and allowed five hits in three innings to notch the win.

Nick Pullano singled twice to lead Apollo.

Blairsville (13-3-1) plays host to Apollo (6-11) on Tuesday.


WEST LEBANON 3-5, TRENDY TRADES 0-8: West Lebanon broke open a pitchers’ duel and scored three runs in the seventh inning to blank Trendy Trades in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Graceton.

West Lebanon player-manager Josh Mottorn drove in the eventual game-winning run when he cracked a homer off Erick Skultety to lead off the top of the seventh. Zack Long added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the inning, and John Nepsha made it a 3-0 game with an RBI single.

Todd Smyers and Nepsha each singled twice for West Lebanon.

Garry Wurm fired a five-hitter to earn the win. Wurm struck out eight and walked two.

Skultety struck out four, walked one and allowed seven hits in a complete-game losing effort.

In Game 2, Trendy Trades used 11 hits and a big rally in the fifth inning to outlast West Lebanon.

With the game knotted 3-3, Trendy Trades plated four runs on five hits and a walk in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Kurt Krejocic, Ryan Bernat and Larry Cadile each ripped RBI singles in the inning.

Krejocic led Trendy Trades by going 3-for-4. Josh Casses finished 2-for-4, Seth Tassos singled and drove in two runs, and Cadile drove in two runs.

Chad Martin struck out five, walked three and allowed eight hits in a complete-game win.

Tyler Beitel went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored for West Lebanon. Long singled twice and drove in two runs, and Nepsha singled twice.

Smyers struck out five and walked one in five innings.

Both teams play Tuesday. West Lebanon (8-5-1) plays host to Bovard, and Trendy Trades (5-8-1) welcomes Greensburg.


NEW DERRY 10, GREENSBURG 0: New Derry racked up 10 hits, including five extra-base his, and handcuffed Greensburg en route to a win in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule at New Derry Field.

Scott Dixon paced New Derry by going 2-for-2 with a double, a homer and three RBIs. Tyler Pakos singled, doubled and drove in two runs, Jimmy Hauser singled, doubled and drove in a run, and Jesse Hart singled twice and drove in a run.

John Santoro struck out six and walked three in four innings to pick up the win.

Both teams play Tuesday. New Derry (7-7-1) travels to Amfire Mining, and Greensburg (3-12) visits Trendy Trades.
