INDIANA COUNTY LEAGUE BASEBALL: Colts take 2-1 lead in semifinals
BLAIRSVILLE — Blairsville’s Jarred Pennavaria tossed a two-hitter, and the Colts managed only one hit but took advantage of five errors and seven walks in a 4-2 win over New Derry in Game 3 of their best-of-five series semifinal series in the Indiana County League playoffs Wednesday at One River Field.
The Colts took a 2-1 lead in the series and can earn their second straight trip to the finals with a victory in either Game 4 at New Derry this evening or Game 5 at home Friday.
The series winner advances to play three-time defending champion Bovard, which finished a sweep of West Lebanon on Tuesday. Bovard swept Blairsville in last year’s best-of-seven championship series.
The finals are slated to begin Sunday at Bovard.
Blairsville scored twice in the first, and Ryan Bernat extended the lead to 3-0 lead when he scored on Scott Thompson’s groundout in the third inning.
New Derry’s Cody Gerhard ripped a two-run triple in the top of the fourth to trim Blairsville’s lead to 3-2.
Then, in the bottom of fifth, Thompson scored on an error to pad the Colts’ lead to 4-2.
Pennavaria struck out two, walked none and surrendered no runs and no hits in the last two innings. He finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks. He also had Blairsville’s lone hit, a single in the bottom of the sixth.
Losing pitcher Scott Dixon fanned six, walked six and allowed no hits and no earned runs in five innings. Jordan Hope struck out one, walked one and yielded one hit and no runs in one inning of relief.
