INDIANA COUNTY LEAGUE: Blairsville hands Bovard first loss
BLAIRSVILLE — The host Colts got outhit, 10-5, but they used rallies in back-to-back innings to hand three-time defending league champ Bovard its first loss of the season, a 5-2 setback in the second game of an Indiana County League baseball doubleheader Wednesday.
Bovard had been 16-0 before Blairsville erased the Bison’s hopes of a perfect regular season.
Bovard piled up 11 hits and backed a solid pitching effort from Greg Martin to win the first game, 7-2.
In the second game, the Colts scored three runs on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Blairsville added two runs on two hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt in the next inning to stretch its lead to 5-1.
Steve Janik struck out five, walked one and allowed no earned runs to notch a complete-game win.
Jared Pennavaria singled and tripled to lead the Colts. David Doak went 2-for-3.
Zack Martin led Bovard by going 4-for-4. Sam Mattei singled three times.
Losing pitcher Tim Buzzard fanned five, walked one and surrendered two earned runs and five hits in five innings.
In the first game, the Bison broke open a one-run game and plated three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Zack Martin clubbed a two-run homer to highlight the rally.
Zack Martin and Mattei each finished 2-for-3 for Bovard.
Greg Martin tossed a three-hitter to earn the win. He struck out eight and walked five.
Culler singled and drove in two runs for Blairsville.
Blairsville (9-7-1) plays host to Apollo in a doubleheader on Sunday. Bovard (16-1) welcomes West Lebanon on Tuesday.
