INDIANA COUNTY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS: West Lebanon trounces Apollo, 21-0, to reach semifinals
APOLLO — West Lebanon clubbed three homers and posted season highs in hits and runs to blank Apollo, 21-0, and finish a sweep in the best-of-three quarterfinal-round series in the Indiana County League baseball playoffs Thursday.
Fourth-seeded West Lebanon (10-14-1) travels to top-seeded Bovard (21-2) for the opening game of the semifinals on Sunday.
“We’ve hit five homers the last two nights,” said West Lebanon player-manager Josh Mottorn, who finished 3-for-6 with a three-run homer and three runs scored.
“We’re not a big power-hitting team by any means, but we’ll take the runs any way we can get them. … We’re just hoping to keep it going Sunday and give Bovard some good games and a good series.”
Anthony Piccolini went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, a grand slam, five RBIs and three runs scored to lead West Lebanon. In the opening game of the series on Wednesday, Piccolini went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs.
Todd Smyers finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs for West Lebanon. Dylin Brooks went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, Matt Griffith and Matt Rebyanski each went 2-for-3, and Zach Long singled and drove in two runs.
Tyler Beitel struck out four, walked none and surrendered seven hits in a complete-game shutout win. Beitel also went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
Ryan Clark went 2-for-2 to pace Apollo.
