CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Michael Ryan’s managerial debut had its ups and downs, but it ultimately ended with a loss.

The West Virginia Power opened the season with a 3-0 loss to the Asheville Tourists on Thursday evening in a Class A South Atlantic League baseball game in front of 2,693 fans.

Ryan, an Indiana native and former major league player, led the Power in his first game as manager since he was hired by the team’s parent club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, over the winter.

Ryan spent last season as the first-base coach for the Class AA Altoona Curve. A 1996 draft pick of the Minnesota Twins, Ryan played professional baseball from 1996 to 2010, and had stints in the major leagues with the Twins and Los Angeles Angels.

On Thursday, four Tourist pitchers limited the Power to two hits and eight total base runners under rainy conditions at Appalachian Power Park.

West Virginia and Asheville continue this four-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.
