IUP BASEBALL: Hawks finish off Clarion
IUP completed its sweep of Clarion, taking a doubleheader, 10-0 and 14-1, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division baseball games Sunday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
The Crimson Hawks combined for 33 hits in the two games, including 13 doubles and four triples. The Golden Eagles managed just 10 hits and struck out 15 times. IUP opened the weekend Saturday by taking two games from Clarion by a combined score of 22-2.
IUP, which ash won six straight, improved to 20-13 overall and 6-6 in PSAC West, and Clarion fell to 1-27 and 1-15.
Kyle Zaorski pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout in the opener and improved to 2-3 on the season. He struck out 10.
IUP scored in five of the seven innings, including a four-run third. IUP cranked out five hits in the inning, including consecutive triples from Jordan DeLuca, Robbie Zinsmeister and Dylan Tice.
In the second game, Brett Quiggle and Jared Weed combined to scatter eight hits and allow one earned run. They struck out five and walked one. Quiggle got the win, his first of the season.
IUP scored in each of the first five innings, including four runs in the second and three each in the third, fourth and fifth. Ten players recorded hits, and IUP finished with 19, including seven doubles and a triple.
Austin Mock finished the day 4-for-7 with three doubles and four RBIs. Ryan Uhl banged out six hits, and John Beatty had four, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Aaron Lupia finished 5-for-8 with three RBIs, and Zinsmeister had two triples and a double.
IUP plays host to Bloomsburg on Tuesday.
