IUP BASKETBALL: Hawks picked No. 15 in preseason poll
Mathis Keita and the IUP men’s basketball team have earned preseason recognition from the Division II Bulletin.
Keita, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, earned a preseason All-America honorable mention honor, and the team is ranked 15th in the preseason poll.
The PSAC tournament most valuable player and All-PSAC West first-team selection, Keita led the Crimson Hawks in nearly every category, including scoring (13.5), rebounding (5.2), field goals (149), assists (3.3) and minutes played (33.1). The Gonzaga transfer made an immediate impact, starting in 28 of the Crimson Hawks’ 32 games.
The reigning PSAC champion, IUP returns three of its top five scorers from last season in Keita, Marcel Souberbielle and Devante Chance. Those three combined for 43 percent of the team’s scoring last season.
The Crimson Hawks finished the 2012-13 season 26-6 and ranked 10th in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 poll. They claimed their third PSAC title in four years and made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament before eventually falling to top-ranked West Liberty.
IUP plays exhibition games at La Salle on Nov. 2 and at Michigan State on Nov. 4.
The regular season begins Nov. 13 at West Virginia Wesleyan. The home opener is Nov. 16 against Notre Dame College.
